Residential Study – Competition

The Sydney Summer House takes cues from the original use of shipping containers, as units that are easily moved. Movement of the containers within the home provide or inhibit spectacular views to the ocean and create private or open living spaces. The goal of the project is to allow the user to shape the home to fit their needs at a moments notice; as the needs of the user change the house changes with them.

As an ever changing object the house can open itself completely to the ocean or be completely closed to protect the privacy of the inhabitants. Sunken into the site, the home attempts to nestle itself into and mimic the beautiful cliffs that it is built upon. Much like the Italian villas, we imagine that this summer house is a quiet escape into nature away from a busy life elsewhere. As a result the home does not open itself to the uninvited.
